Trees & Shrubs
Let's discuss some common landscape myths and best practices, to ensure your landscape investment looks healthy year after year.

Q: "Should the wire cage and burlap net be removed when planting large trees?"
A: Always cut and remove the upper half of the wire basket and burlap net! The lower burlap should be sliced to allow for lateral root growth.
If not sliced, the burlap netting will impede root growth and water absorption. The lower half of the wire basket is important to contain the mass of the rootball.
Q: "How long should I water my newly planted trees or shrubs?"
A: A general rule of thumb is providing 3 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter, for the first 10 days.
Avoid 'monsoon' watering techniques. A slow, gentle trickle from a garden hose or a slow release watering bag is most preferred.
Checking the soil with your fingers or a screwdriver can indicate to increase/decrease watering intervals. The soil should be damp - avoid standing water or mud.
Q: "How do I prevent damage to my trees and shrubs during the winter?"
A: Conway Landscapes advises all
clients to fence off their landscape plantings with 6' nylon deer fence during the winter months. Wildlife can cause irreversible damage to shrubs and trees.
In areas were there is salt/road spray from highway plows, wrapping shrubs in burlap can help mitigate salt burn.
